An interesting article and on the right track but I'm afraid it isn't in line with the latest scholarship.

I suggest you read the article YAHWEH in 'Dictionary of Deities and Demons in the Bible' (DDD) 2nd edition. The entry runs to several pages so I can't reproduce it here. Unfortunately the DDD is very expensive, I paid over £80 for mine, but there are free e-copies on the Internet.

The two principal gods of the early Israelites were El and Baal.

From the DDD entry on Yahweh: ... The absence of references to a Syrian or Palestinian cult of Yahweh outside Israel suggests that the god does not belong to the traditional circle of West Semitic deities. The origins of veneration must be sought elsewhere. A number of texts suggest that Yahweh was worshipped in southern Edom and Midian before his cult spread to Palestine. There are two Egyptian texts that mention Yahweh. In these texts from the 14th and 13th centuries BCE, Yahweh is neither connected with the Israelites, nor is his cult located in Palestine.

Wow what a wonderfully thoughtful discussion on mirror neurons. I have been fascinated by them since reading Marco Iacboni's book but have read so much more on them since that time which has only confused me. This is really an exciting frontier and you have clarified many points. Thanks for the comprehensive and thoughful essay.

This is en exceptionally ignorant argument... coming from someone who is studying anthropology, biology and genetics among others... Please go to the web site for the Max Plank Institute for genetics, if you really want to know what they looked like. FYI, one of the things that has been found by sequencing Neanderthal DNA, is that apparently Neanderthals are Not prone to the genetic disorder of Schizophrenia... which seems to largely be the basis for these reconstruction images....

Hah, clever. I like that.

Also it's as good as any other theory as for how the god of the jews got his name. In fact, it's the best one I've come across yet.

Good blog, great website. Cheers.
